My
paintings reflect my desire to create a fantasy world based on spatial memories
and experiences. Over the years travel has been an integral part in my artistic
practice. By experiencing differing landscapes and cultures I have been able to
find contrasting ideas of beauty, while simultaneously discovering similarities
within the details of our surroundings. Focus is given to specifics related to
geology, finding details in the internal structure, which showcase its
evolution. Through growth and decay many layers of the organic matter are
visible in one instant, reflecting its development and process, a visual
metaphor for our own personal journey in life.
Each
piece reflects a chaotic fullness; many layers of paint display multiple
perspectives resulting in a fictional expansion. The elaborate and sometimes
impenetrable space becomes an arena for discovery, challenging the viewer to
reflect on their own memories and fall into their own imagination.
Correspondingly, I intentionally title each painting within a categorizing
system (letters and numbers). This aids the viewer to become the narrator,
rather then being led in a direction due to explanatory titles.
The
abstractions are referential yet unclear, demanding active viewing while
commenting on the beauty of the unknown and the necessity of fantasy. I
encourage the viewer to be open to possibility, just as I am in the evolution
of each painting, as I unveil compositions of understood complexity.
